Introduction to stone surface treatment technology (1)

<<Previous  Next>>

Stones such as marble, granite, slate, etc. are relatively common products in daily life. In today's life, more and more people use stone in indoor and outdoor decoration. Different spaces, and different design techniques, require different properties of the stone to meet its functionality. For example, the wet area of the bathroom cannot use smooth stone, and the decoration of the hotel lobby generally does not use dull stone, and the service space needs to consider the durability of the stone.

Any decorative material is giving decoration to the space, and different stone surface treatment methods can also meet different design concepts. For example, if you want a magnificent effect, you need high-gloss stone; to create a mood of returning to nature, irregular matte or natural cleft stone is the best choice.

For an ordinary stone to be used in indoor and outdoor decoration, it must be processed, its shape can be changed, its surface can be made smooth, etc., so it needs to be processed. In the case of ensuring the safety of the stone itself, different treatment methods will be used for the surface of the stone, so that it presents different material styles to meet various design needs, which is the so-called stone surface treatment. Any natural stone can be surface treated, but according to the type and pattern of the stone, the suitable surface treatment form is also different. It is necessary to select the appropriate surface treatment form according to the hardness and characteristics of the stone. At the time, the processing technology used is different and affected the final effect. The common stone surface treatment processes are as follows, and we will briefly introduce them respectively.

1. Polished ( polished)
The polished surface refers to a plate with a flat surface polished with resin abrasives to make it have a mirror gloss. The luminosity of general stone can reach 80, or 90 degrees, and the luminosity of some high-density stones can even reach 100 degrees or more, but some stone types cannot be polished, and can only be made matte at most. In general, the higher the luminosity, the higher the price. Polished surfaces are generally used in flat curtain walls, indoor walls, floors, etc., especially in some high-end buildings, where the indoor walls and floors have high requirements for luminosity. It is characterized by high luminosity and strong reflection of light, which can fully display the rich and gorgeous colors and natural texture of the stone itself.

2. Matt surface (honed)
The matte surface refers to the smooth surface, and the surface is less polished with resin abrasives, etc. Its luminosity is lower than that of the polished surface, generally around 30-50, 60. It has a certain luminosity, but the reflection of light is weak. The surface is flat and smooth, and the luminosity is very low.

3. Flamed (flamed)
A fired surface refers to a rough surface finish formed by heating the stone surface with a high-temperature flame generated by using acetylene + oxygen or propane + oxygen, or petroleum-liquefied gas + oxygen as fuel. There are a few stones that cannot be processed by fire or that the effect of processing is not good. Due to the effect of burning, some impurities and low melting point components on the surface of the stone can be burned off, thus forming a rough finish on the surface, and the hand will feel a certain thorn. The processing of burnt surfaces has certain requirements on the thickness of the stone to prevent the stone from breaking during the processing. Generally, the thickness is required to be at least 2CM, and some stone thickness requirements will be higher. In addition, some materials will have a certain discoloration during the burning process, such as rust stone (G682). After burning, the rusted stone will show a certain light red color instead of the original yellow rust color. The characteristics of the burning surfaces are rough and natural surface, non-slip, non-reflective, fast processing, relatively cheap price, and often used in external wall dry hanging and outdoor floors.
